A short-circuit goal is something you’d like to achieve but achieving it would keep you from achieving a more satisfying goal in the future.
Spotting a short-circuit goal from a list of goals is tricky.
These goals often take the form of quick wins or not putting all your eggs in one basket.
Energy to achieve is something that builds inside of you. Energy well-spent flows to the right destination, achieving something you were meant to achieve.
A short circuit goal causes this energy to arc, to jump the circuit, to deviate from the path set out for it, and to not meet its final destination with the same magnitude.
A true goal will feel right.
A few quick tests:
“This is something I must do”
Goal.
“This is something I can do.”
Possibly a short-circuit goal.
“This is core to who I am and mine to do.”
Goal.
“This is something that is easily monetized and would get me a lot of followers and then I can do whatever I want.”
Short-circuit goal.
