*Week 0 is winding down, and as I sit here am a bit sleepy.*

a z score gives the location of a score in terms of the number of standard deviations above or below the mean.

the standard error of the mean

What does standard error mean again?

The expected deviation of a sample mean from the population mean is known as the

standard errorand is the standard deviation of the sampling distribution.

NHST

null hypothesis significance testing

The main target of these lively interchanges is the practice of focusing (almost exclusively) on the probability values (p values) from NHST and incorrectly using them to make dichotomous decisions as to the truth of a null hypothesis

Not sure what the hang-ups are with NHST, but I’m kind of brushing off my stats skills so this is likely not a good thing to be exploring without mastery of the methods so far.

### Ch 1: The Logic of Experimental Design …

historical and philosophical context for the statistical methodology

Interesting!

statistical decisions can be regarded as part of an organized argument warranting an inductive inference about some part of reality.

Critical.

Can statistical inferences based on convenience samples rather than random sampling from a population be legitimate?

I think about this. Why does it have to be random? Its pretty random that I’m even taking samples in the first place.

statistics as an aid to building and evaluating models

What does stats have to do with models? When I first took stats, I don’t think I knew anything about models.

science … the modern era … its methodology: empirical observation and, whenever possible, experimentation.

a deliberate manipulation of variables was to replace the “noting and naming” kind of empiricism

in the Baconian view, scientific observations are to be made in a purely objective fashion by individuals having no loyalties to any hypotheses or beliefs that would cause them to be blind to any portion of the empirical evidence.

Easier said than done! At least NHST gives some method about doing this.
