Use of Augmented Reality to Train Sensemaking in High-Stakes Medical Environments

Why this paper

  • I think will be of interest to the group, lots of medical people, I’m an interface person. Folks who aren’t medical are learning / cognitive people (for the most part).

a framework

extended reality technologies

effectiveness on training outcomes is not yet clear

That’s what this paper is about to do I think

four key elements of sensmaking …

  • mental models(!)
  • perceptual skills (?)
  • assessment skills (?)
  • generating / evaluating hypothesis

the lack of an effective theoretical framework for why extended reality should be included in training in the first place

Yeah why? Is just because its a hot new thing, kind space-y.

naturaliistic decision making (NDM) models … complex, high-stress, dynamic ,experts, specialized roles

macrocogntive vs microcogntive

This is neat.

macrocogntive … sense making

sense making … the process of collecting and integrating information and assessing how it fits with possible explanations

Initial data point to a relevant frame

a frame is the organizing structure fort he data and reflects a person’s compiled past experiences relative to the situation.

Frames include

  • scripts – roles in relation to other roles
  • maps – location relative to other landmarks
  • chronology of events – causal explanations
  • plans – relationships between intended actions.

The frame then guides additional data exploration to test whether the frame is sufficient or whether it needs to be modified or discarded. This interactive process of data exploration, framing, and re-framing drives sensemaking.

Neat!
